Drinks and Sweet Endings for the 4th of July

The Fourth of July is right around the corner. Remember to drink safely, moderation is key. It is a holiday so some may indulge a little more than usual. Alcohol has calories and can lower your inhibition to make good food choices. You may find yourself eating more than you intended or picking foods that you normally would think twice about.

A 5oz glass of wine ~130 calories
1 oz hard liquor ~100 calories
1 Regular beer ~150 calories
1 Light beer ~110 calories

Cocktails can be troublesome... a typical strawberry daiquiri has ~250 calories, a margarita has ~300 calories, and a pina colada will run you about 450 calories. Swapping for sugar-free margarita or daiquiri mix will slash the calories, unfortunately there's not a lot of hope for the pina colada. Try diet
sodas or seltzer over fruit juices. If you want some fruity flavor, add a splash of your
favorite juice.

Iced tea and lemonade can be super high in sugar. Try unsweetened tea with lemon, or
the sugar-free varieties like Crystal Light. Make spritzers or “mocktails” with seltzer and
your favorite fruit juice (I like pomegranate or peach). Add mint and fresh fruit to make it
something special!

Last, but definitely not least is dessert. The great part about summer is that fruit is
bountiful and can be a delicious and refreshing dessert, especially on a hot day! Try fresh
watermelon, fruit salad, or strawberry shortcake with angel food cake for something
light! Watch out for high fat desserts like fruit pies, take a smaller piece or share with a
friend!

No time for a workout before the party? Picnics are a great time to be physically active!
Throw a Frisbee, go swimming, or start up a game of volleyball, badminton, or waffle
ball. It all counts! Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise, and more is always better :)

Have a fun and safe holiday!
